Superintendent further addresses concerns about ELC project

By Brittany Davenport
Advocate staff writer
Montgomery County Schools superintendent Daniel Freeman last week released a detailed three-page statement about the Montgomery County Early Learning Center project. It was sent home with all Montgomery County students.
The statement came after a heated Montgomery County Board of Education meeting in which members voted 3-2 to build a new ELC. In the release Freeman addressed his recommended plan for the project and the outlined details of what the board approved at the February monthly meeting.
A list of several reasons why Freeman cannot support the construction of a new facility were included and he mentioned cost and the fact the current facility on Maysville Road could accommodate overcrowding problems at other schools.
He suggested if the school system is going to build a new facility it should be a fourth elementary school, although that might not be financially feasible at this time.
In order for the new plan to move ahead the board must meet with the Local Planning Committee and revise the Master Facilities Plan. At the March monthly board meeting, Freeman said he plans to suggest the board meet with the committee.
Board chair Fern Reed said she had no comment about the matter.
“I think that will follow later,” she said.
Board member Kelly Murphy said cost and logistics of the project still need to be looked at.
“I’m in support of renovating the current Early Learning Center,” he said.
Freeman released another statement Tuesday afternoon stating Reed had asked him to clarify that an actual site for the new center had not been determined and that before the project can be fully approved numerous sites must be considered.
Board member Kenney Gulley had no comment about the issue and other board members were not available for comment at press time.
